In-Person Learning to be Offered for Students Pre-K to Second Grade

To start the second quarter of school, the Carson City School District is pleased to offer full, in-person, on-campus instruction for students Pre-k to second grade, four days a week, Tuesdays through Fridays. These students will no longer function within a cohort group. The first official day of this more traditional education model will begin Tuesday, Oct. 20.

For all students (at all grade levels) throughout the Carson City School District, Mondays will remain remote learning days. Students, both full-remote and in-seat, will check in with their homeroom teachers electronically and work independently throughout the school day.

Students in grades third through fifth will remain in their assigned cohort groups and will continue to receive instruction via the hybrid-blended learning model. Although discussions and considerations for all primary grades to return to a more traditional education model continue, no dates have been forecasted for a full return.

Any students and families who have elected full-remote instruction may continue to remain in the remote learning instruction model if they choose. The wearing of face masks and maintaining social distancing between students is still expected.

Additional adjustments include playgrounds and playground equipment at elementary schools are to be open for use to students. Individual schools have the authority to establish protocols for recess times and equipment usage that will complement individual school schedules, operational and safety practices, staffing and social distancing restrictions.

“We feel confident in bringing more elementary students back to school safely and in compliance with government directives,” said Richard Stokes, superintendent for the Carson City School District. “I realize that these modifications represent a shift from how we began the school year; however, it is our desire and duty to find the methods and systems that will best address the academic needs of our students and families while living within the Pandemic. As governmental directions and social conditions change, our educational operations will also reflect these changes. We will continue to use the guidance and best practices suggested by national and state leaders in an effort to keep our students and staff safe.”

The Mark Twain teaching staff is committed to communicating with you regularly about classroom events.  Teachers will be sending home a letter of introduction so that you can get to know a little bit about their professional training and personal background. This year we will be conducting a “Virtual Back to School night” so be looking for information soon via Parent Square and our face book page.      Unfortunately, due to safety precautions and District and State guidelines due to the Covid pandemic there are some new changes on campus.  Our school social worker, Mrs. Griffiths is available should you need further resources or have concerns.
  • No visitors (yes this includes parents) on campus.  For the safety of all students and staff we will not be letting visitors in the door or walk their child to class.
  • For your child’s first day of attendance (kindergarten only) parents may walk through the gate and wave good bye to their child at the door.  (We must limit the number of persons on campus).  Kindergarten parents will be able to view their child’s class through the windows and see that they are safe.  We understand how hard it is to have their first school experience during these unprecedented times, but understand it is for the safety of all.
  • All other parents and visitors will need to say their good byes at the gate, staff will be there to assist your child into the doors and to their classroom.
  • Staff will be visible to help you ensure you are on the right day and the right class should you have any questions.
  • Students will enter the building via the back playground doors as early as 8:10 – or bus arrival and go to their classrooms – and start their breakfast.
  • As for now – the physical play equipment is closed – no worries our PTO and your child’s teacher has some fun activities planned that will allow for no-equipment sharing.
  • All students must wear a mask while on campus (please send with two) They will not wear a mask while at lunch or recess.  Teachers will work with your child to help remind them to wear their mask – it is a learning opportunity and we will work on it together.
  • Please send your child with a water bottle as drinking fountains are closed – but our water bottle filling stations are still accessible.
  • All students and staff will be washing hands frequently and using hand sanitizers as needed.

I know these are uncharted times, and a unique school experience – however, I know we will be stronger as a result of these changes and our kids will do a great job.  Please let me know if you need any support from our school staff as we work together.

Together in Education,

Ruthlee Caloiaro
