Carson City’s Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) will host northern Nevada’s FIRST LEGO League Qualifier this coming Saturday, Dec. 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event promises to be a fun-filled day that showcases the talent and creativity of young innovators across northern Nevada. There is no cost for admission to the event.

The FIRST LEGO League is a renowned program that combines the excitement of robotics with the exploration of real-world challenges. This year's theme, "Masterpiece," encourages students to explore and connect STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts to create amazing solutions.

FIRST is an acronym meaning "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology." Teams competing at the robotics competition will be challenged to take their passion for STEM and build something with purpose that would help solve problems in their communities.

During the event, participants will have the chance to witness the brilliant problem-solving skills and teamwork displayed from the LEGO teams. The day will be filled with thrilling robot matches, inspiring project presentations and numerous hands-on activities that demonstrate the ingenuity and perseverance of so many young minds.

Last year, the EVMS after-school robotics program was recognized for earning two awards, the Robot Performance Award and the Breakthrough Award, at the FIRST LEGO League Qualifier at Trainer Middle School in Reno.

If you have a passion for STEAM education and would like to contribute your time and expertise, the school would greatly appreciate your help. Volunteers can assist in various roles, such as event setup, registration, judging and more. Please contact Kimberly Tucker, EVMS Robotics Coach, at [email protected], if you are interested in volunteering.

Last November, the district hosted a Robotics Day at Eagle Valley Middle School. The FIRST LEGO League students from EVMS, Carson Middle School, Empire Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Fremont Elementary School all attended. Students from the different schools collaborated with each other to work on solutions for this year's robotics missions.
