The Carson City School District and Carson High School were pleased to commemorate 911 this past weekend with the assistance of Troop 341 and an Eagle Scout Project. Chandler Ricks, an eleventh grader at Sierra Lutheran High School, and his troop cleaned and repaired the 911 Memorial just outside the main entrance of Carson High.
The project, which involved planning, fundraising and volunteer work, has breathed new life into the cherished landmark that pays tribute to the sacrifices made by local heroes. Time and the northern Nevada weather had taken a toll on the structure. Recognizing the importance of preserving this meaningful tribute, Ricks stepped forward to lead the restoration efforts.
The young men and leaders scrapped gum, power washed, filled in cracks, repaired broken cement on the left tower and polished the marble plaques. They also cleaned the bronze plate, which includes a poem written by Chandler’s aunt, Charity Moore. The poem and bronze plate were written more than 20 years ago and dedicated September 11, 2002.

The project was a testament to Ricks and his troop and their commitment to this community and their dedication to the values of the Boy Scouts of America. Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is remarkable achievement and showcases the dedication and leadership skills instilled in young men through their participation in the scouting program.
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent youth development organizations, providing programs that build character, promote citizenship and develop leadership skills in young people. For more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America has prepared young people for a lifetime of leadership and service.
The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America program and is attained by only a select few Scouts who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, character and dedication to community service through their completion of an extensive service project.
