If you have witnessed performances by the CHS Cadet, Concert or Marching Band, or the Advanced Jazz or Wind Ensemble during the past few years, then you have listened to this month’s Student in the Spotlight, Alexis Garcia Perez.

Alexis began his music career in the 5th grade when he learned to play the Alto Saxophone. In 7th grade, he wanted to add an additional instrument so he taught himself how to play the Bassoon. In high school he learned to play the Euphonium and the Tenor Saxophone and became involved in the Color Guard. Through the Color Guard, Alexis has been able to attend summer Leadership and Marching camps in California. In December he was contracted by the Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps who will perform across the country traveling approximately 13,000 miles.

As a Jump Start participant, Alexis will be graduating with his Associates of Art degree from WNC just before he receives his diploma from CHS. Despite the tremendous amount of time he spends on his musical endeavors (has never missed helping at a fundraiser for the music program or performance) or his part-time job at Bubble Tea, he has maintained a 4.91 GPA taking (almost exclusively) Honors and Advanced classes.

In August, Alexis will be settling in at UNR with a duel major of Anthropology and Sociology with a minor in Music.

Alexis attributes his many successes to his closest friends and family and to his Color Guard coach, Emma Brown.
