The gift of giving was alive and well at Pioneer Academy during the week leading up to Thanksgiving. Thanks to the annual support and generosity of the Hernandez family, Jenn and the managers at FoodMaxx, and the Pioneer students and staff, the school was able to provide a full Thanksgiving meal to 30 families in the Carson City School District.

Each year the Hernandez family has donated food to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal for a family, 30 families this year. Mrs. Conny Hernandez worked at Pioneer as the office manager, and for years saw the need that many students had, particularly around the holiday season. When she retired, she decided to do something about it and help her community.  Conny said she and her husband, Danny, have been blessed with the ability to give back to the community, and they are involving their kids, grandkids, cousins and even her mom in that philosophy.

In addition to the Hernandez donation, Pioneer Academy staff donated turkeys, hams and other items to help complete the dinner baskets. The dinner baskets were packed and prepared by leadership students and other Pioneer student volunteers. After all the baskets were filled, they were delivered to each Carson City school and given to families who could use a little extra help during the holiday season.

“This time of year highlights the needs many of our families have in the Carson City area,” said Cary Jordan, Pioneer Academy Counselor. “Thank you to the Hernandez family and to FoodMaxx for your dedication and generosity and working with the students and staff of Pioneer Academy to provide this opportunity to help a few more families in our community celebrate Thanksgiving.”
